My first day at the Loughborough University – How to make the most out of it.
Hey, I’m Debee and I’ll be one of your Erasmus Officers. This is my final year at Loughborough and I've missed it after a year of Erasmus in France!
Believe me, I still remember the days before moving. My emotions were all over the place. I thought, “how can I cope away from home?”, “what if I’m homesick?” – all of these thoughts were overwhelming me. I can reassure you that many students will experience these feelings.
Inevitably I was nervous for my first day of University. I made the first step of introducing myself to my flatmates. Fortunately, we clicked and we all continued to introduce ourselves to other flats. Freshers week went by so fast, it was insane! I guess it's true when they say that time goes quicker when you're having fun. You will get the chance to meet loads of other people from your halls, you may even meet people who are studying the same course as you. It only took a week for me to realise that Loughborough was the perfect place and there was nothing to be afraid of. The University was lively and everyone was lovely. We had so many opportunities to get involved and this made me feel like I’d chosen the best place to spend my three years.
My main advice is to introduce yourself to as many people as you can. Try to make new friends and socialise with everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are shy as everyone is in the same boat as you. You’ll find that speaking to more people will encourage you to get out of your comfort zone, and it will increase your confidence. Loughborough University has a range of Societies, AU Sports Clubs, and activities such as IMS, Rag and Action, and plenty of networking events. I believe to avoid feeling homesick is to get more involved.
They say that “your University years are your best years in life” and I strongly agree with this statement. This is my last year at Loughborough and I do not want to leave the University bubble. Once you arrive, you will understand what I mean by that. You will experience a different life here and you will love it. I cannot stress how much you need to make the most out of your years at the University. It is certainly what you make of it.
Remember - "Loughborough will be your home away from home" - All the best!
Yours sincerely, Debee
