LSU Statement: UCU Strike Action

At the end of last month, the University and Colleges Union (UCU) – the trade union representing academics and senior professional services staff - announced up to 14 days of strike action at 61 universities, including Loughborough, following a dispute over proposed changes to the University Pension Schemes.

Loughborough Students’ Union (LSU) empathises with the UCU and its members, including those who are also represented by us, and recognises the difficult situation they are facing. However, whilst we respect academics’ right to strike, we are concerned by the impact these planned actions will have on students studying at Loughborough – particularly finalists during the final weeks of their dissertation.

At LSU, we are working closely with the University to ensure key information is communicated effectively to provide reassurance to our students. George Etherington (LSU President) and Anna Holt (LSU Education Executive Officer) added: “We have met with both the University and the UCU to discuss all stances of the argument. We understand that despite the national dispute, here locally UCU and the University have a good relationship and are working together to urge the parties to return to negotiations. As representatives of Loughborough students (here in Loughborough, Loughborough College and at our Loughborough London campus), our primary aim is to ensure that disruption to studies during the planned striking action is kept to a minimum. Whilst we are empathetic with staff, we are here to represent the best interests of our students. We do not support activity that disrupts the education of students or the wider Loughborough student experience.”

Working with the University, we will be doing everything we can to ensure that this has minimal impact on your studies, and no impact to your degree qualifications.

If you would like to find out more information on what the planned strike action could mean for you, Loughborough University have created a series of FAQ’s aimed at answering any concerns you may have. We will also be actively encouraging you to share any concerns you may have with us at our next Student Forum on 20th February, at 6-8pm, Fusion, LSU.

Monday 26th – Wednesday 28th February (Three Days)
